On Sunday, February 10, 2019, heavy snowfall was responsible for multiple vehicle crashes across central Indiana. As snow fell across central Indiana, several slide-offs were reported across the area, and some counties began issuing travel advisories to warn drivers about the potentially dangerous conditions created by the heavy snowfall. The various incidents kept the local police busy, with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responding to dozens of accidents from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., including 187 property damage crashes, 20 personal injury accidents, and 24 slide-offs. The Indiana State Police had already been busy responding to 59 crashes (six including injuries) and 15 slide-offs since 10 a.m. One of the incidents on Sunday involved a collision on the northwest side that closed one lane of I-65 southbound near 71st Street and mile marker 126 for hours. Seven vehicles were involved in a crash on the off-ramp from 465 northbound to Rockville Road on the west side of Indianapolis, including a Wayne Township Fire Department fire engine. Three civilians and a firefighter suffered minor injuries as a result of that collision. According to the Wayne Township Fire Department, the owner of a red pickup truck left the scene and has requested that anyone with information please contact Indiana State Police or the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. The Boone County Sheriff’s Office also reported several vehicles crashes on I-65 in Lebanon, noting that the roads in that county were snow-covered, slick, and hazardous. The Boone County Sheriff’s office said that I-65 southbound had been closed due to the multiple crashes. Boone County later issued a yellow travel advisory on the same date. Drivers on I-65 at the Clinton/Tippecanoe county line were backed up on I-65 northbound and southbound. After several crashes occurred in Hamilton County, the Hamilton County Emergency Management issued a yellow travel advisory until further notice, saying that mixed precipitation had resulted in several collisions around the county, which included a collision that occurred at U.S. 31 and State Road 38 in Westfield.
