On Friday July 26, 2019, a man riding his bicycle in Hancock County was struck by a vehicle in the morning. The collision occurred in the area of 1233 East State Road 234, and police were called in to investigate when someone called in reporting a bicyclist lying in a grassy ditch waving for help. The caller stayed with the bicyclist until the authorities arrived and told the police that there were no other vehicles in the area when they saw the victim of the collision in the ditch. The victim was flown into IU Methodist Health hospital in critical condition, with him stating that he likely survived the collision initially because he was wearing a helmet. Investigating authorities say that the evidence indicates that the bicyclist was riding with traffic near the white fog line when he was struck from behind by a vehicle traveling westbound towards Indianapolis. Authorities believe that vehicle that struck the victim is a Ford F-250, black or white, with evidence of the vehicle at the scene and believe that the vehicle will have extensive damage to the passenger side headlight assembly and mirror. The investigation is ongoing, and the authorities have requested that anyone with information contact the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department and to share the road and pass bicycle riders at least three feet away in accordance with Indiana Code 9-21-8-5, and for all bicyclists to wear helmets.
