On August 21, 2020, in Fort Wayne, a collision occurred involving several vehicles and a motorcycle on northbound I-469 near the ramp area for I-69. The Indiana State Police asked other motorists to avoid the area following the collision due to lane closures caused by the collision. According to investigators, the collision occurred when an unsecured load fell off a truck onto the road. The crew of the truck pulled over and tried to retrieve the load causing oncoming traffic to swerve and brake to avoid them. A motorcyclist who rode upon the debris had to brake hard to avoid a rear-collision and lost control before sliding down the road into a ditch. The driver of the motorcycle was taken a hospital with serious injuries, although she had been wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
Trucks that carry large loads across major highways throughout the country can put other drivers on the road at risk if their loads are not securely held to their vehicles. When various objects start coming off vehicles, the drivers behind them have to evade or break, potentially putting everyone behind them on the road in danger.
