On Sunday, July 14, 2019, a multi-vehicle collision during the afternoon resulted in the death of a mother and her two daughters after their vehicle was struck by a semi-truck. Seven other people involved in the collision were taken to hospitals with two of them in critical condition. The collision was caused by a semi-truck driver that claimed a small white car cut in front of his vehicle, forcing him to brake which caused him to strike the vehicle in front of him. However, according to the Indianapolis Fire Department, witnesses to the collision say that the truck driver didn’t see traffic stopped on the interstate and drove into the stopped traffic at a high rate of speed. The driver of the semi-truck was arrested on three counts of reckless homicide and five counts of criminal recklessness causing injuries. The lanes were closed during Sunday afternoon, with debris from the collision stretching for nearly a mile, some from one car that had been pinned against the shoulder wall and dragged 300 yards before hitting two other vehicles.
