On October 23, 2016, a 65-year-old motorcyclist was struck head-on by a 2013 Hyundai Accent, after a 75-year-old driver of the Accent fell asleep while driving northbound on Indiana State Road 446. The collision occurred when the driver of the Accent veered into the southbound lane of State Road 446 near Tower Ridge Road and collided with the motorcyclist before traveling approximately 900 feet before coming to a stop. As a result of the collision, the motorcyclist was transported to IU Health Bloomington before ultimately being flown to IU Health Methodist due to suffering from a critical head injury. Officials with the Indiana State Police, Monroe County Sheriff’s Department, and the Indiana Conversation Officers responded to the scene and while investigating the collision, the driver of the Accent stated that he awoke just prior before striking the motorcyclist. Due to the severity of the collision, State Road 446 was closed for nearly 3 hours before allowing traffic.
