On September 3, 2016, a mechanic and employee of Indiana Beach was injured after being struck by a rollercoaster car on the amusement park’s Cornball Express attraction. The employee was injured while providing maintenance and repairs on the car. As a result of the incident, the Indiana Beach employee sustained serious injuries and was taken to IU White Memorial Hospital before eventually being airlifted to an Indianapolis Hospital. This incident raises considerable concerns as earlier in the year a 10-year-old child was killed after a tree branch broke loose in the amusement park’s campground killing the boy while sleeping a tent. Although park officials claimed that the prior incident was an act of God and not negligence, in a statement to the media the park’s marketing director compared this prior incident with incidents involving accident with amusement park rides. However, an investigation by inspectors from the State of Indiana following the incident in which the employee was injured concluded that nothing was wrong with the Cornball Express and that it was operating properly at the time of the incident.
Although considerably uncommon, incidents involving amusement park attractions such as rollercoasters often have serious impact on victims injured while participating in such attractions.
