The new year started with Indiana State police reporting to the scenes of several multiple vehicle accidents along I-74, west of the Covington area on the morning of January 3, 2018. The initial problem, according to investigating officers, began when three semi-trucks crashed while traveling east bound along I-74 at the mile 4 marker, east of the Indiana/Illinois state line and in doing so created several other accidents that would occur behind them as drivers attempted to drive around the wreckage, causing other collisions in the process The Indiana State police have reported that at least six other vehicular accidents are still being investigated behind the trucks, while cleanup crews had been working to erect the two semis that had been overturned in the first accident with both completely blocking the interstate. Traffic that day was reportedly backed up for 8 to 10 miles from this accident while the Indiana State Police continued to investigate the cause of the initial incident.

An accident of such a large scale may not happen in the blink of an eye, and you may not be there to see it happen, but you may still drive end up becoming part of it, even if you do proceed with caution. You may drive safely and stop instead of trying to drive around such an obvious mess, but that does not mean that everyone behind you will have the same sense of safety for you or themselves.
