Following the recent development of numerous roundabout within recent years especially within Hamilton County and throughout the State of Indiana, a new law taking effect on July 1, 2017, will address concerns facing truck drivers who use traffic circles. The new law focuses on scenarios in which motorists and truck drivers approach a roundabout simultaneously. Under the new law, motorists would no longer be able to attempt to enter the roundabout simultaneously or continue alongside a truck or tractor-trailer while traveling within the roundabout. Instead, motorists in such instances would be required to slow down and yield the right of way to trucks and tractor-trailers entering the roundabout. In addition, in instances where two truck drivers approach a roundabout simultaneously, under the new law, the truck driver on the right would be required to yield to the truck driver on the left. As this legislation intends to prevent avoidable collisions and make better use of roundabouts safer for all motorists, violators of the new law could face a fine of up to $500.
As roundabouts have become an important part of the Indiana infrastructure in attempting to remove unnecessary traffic control signals and increase travel efficiency, laws designed to improve roundabout safety may reduce collisions and as a result preventable injuries.
