In an effort to brighten the city and reduce crime, IPL plans to install 24 new LED lights along Shadeland Avenue between 75th and 82nd Streets as part of “Operation Night Light”. This is the latest initiative by the City of Indianapolis to make the city safer and to reduce violence. Operation Night Light began in 2016, and ended a 35-year moratorium on new, city-funded streetlights and added an additional 100 new streetlights. The first 24 lights that will be set up are just the first of 4,000 new streetlights that will be installed around the city through 2025. According to the mayor of Indianapolis, the new lights are there to help neighborhoods where the people are not comfortable being outside when the sun goes down. The new street lights are also an issue of public safety for pedestrians and people who use walkways or are out on the streets throughout the neighborhoods that don’t currently have streetlights or have streetlights that are no longer operable. As part of Operation Nightlight older lights will be replaced with LED, which the mayor estimates will save the city $800,000.00 a year and take about the three years to complete.
Night time can be dangerous even in a well lite area and sidewalk without street lights can put anyone walking at night or trying to cross the road in even more danger. Vehicle headlights may not see a person until they are right in front of them.
