A collision that occurred on Interstate 74 east of Danville on the night of October 7, 2020, resulted in the death of a pedestrian. Dispatchers received a call on the morning of October 8, 2020, from a driver stating that he hit something in the road and sustained damage to his vehicle. When authorities arrived at the scene of the 5-mile marker of eastbound I-74 near the State Road 63 interchange, they found the body of a pedestrian that had been struck and killed by an unknown motorist. Investigators believe that the pedestrian was in the middle of the roadway when she was struck after locating a vehicle with emergency flashers on that was parked in the emergency lane to the west. Witnesses at the scene claim that the pedestrian was in a vehicle sitting in the emergency lane who then exited her vehicle for unknown reasons. Investigators do not know how long the pedestrian was outside of her vehicle before she was struck.
Every driver, whether on a highway or small back road, should be on the watch for pedestrians that may appear on the road. Emergencies can happen anywhere at any time, and drivers should always be aware of pedestrians that have to pull off the road, especially if they get out of their vehicle.
