An Indiana State Police Trooper was able to escape with minor injuries on Interstate 70 during the evening of Saturday, January 26, 2019, after his vehicle was struck by a semi-trailer. According to the police report, the State Trooper was working on a motor vehicle accident that involved a truck that had run off the road east of Terre Haute. The State Trooper’s vehicle was in the driving lane of Interstate 70 and all emergency lights had been activated while the State Trooper was diverting oncoming traffic to the passing lane. The lights of the State Trooper’s vehicle were seen by a 2019 Freightliner tractor-trailer traveling westbound which promptly hit the brakes. However, because of the weather conditions, the driver lost control of the tractor-trailer and began to jack-knife, striking the State Trooper’s vehicle on the driver’s side. The State Trooper was wearing his seat belt at the time of the collision and sustained only minor cuts and bruises. He was cleared by medics who checked him at the scene of the collision. The driver and co-driver of the tractor-trailer, both from Mississauga, Ontario, were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The State Trooper believes that the accident was caused by the tractor-trailer driving too fast in weather conditions that left the road very slick.
