Three people are dead after a collision caused by a wrong-way driver, which occurred on the Indiana Toll Road, on the evening of Sunday June 17, 2018. The Indiana State Police stated they received calls about a black Toyota that had been driving erratically near mile marker 83 around 7:30 p.m. Shortly thereafter, the vehicle turned around and started going westbound in the eastbound lanes, which resulted in a head-on collision involving the Toyota and a 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe. Police stated that the Toyota had been in the eastbound passing lane when it smashed into the Tahoe. The Toyota then crashed into a 2015 Kenworth truck, and the driver of a 2012 Chevrolet Malibu served to avoid the crash and lost control of the vehicle, crashing through the center median and hitting the crash barrels before ending up in the westbound lanes. Passing motorists stopped to help the occupants of the Chevrolet Tahoe that had by then caught fire on it’s right side. The driver of the Tahoe was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, while another passenger, a young child, was treated at an area hospital before being airlifted to Riley Hospital. The front seat passenger of the Tahoe was pronounced dead at the scene, and a small child passenger as well. Another passenger, a 12-year old, was taken to an area hospital but died later from their injuries. The driver of the Toyota, who had to be extricated from the vehicle, was taken to an area hospital. Investigators believe alcohol was a factor in the collision between the vehicles. The driver of the Malibu went to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and the driver of the Kenworth was not hurt according to the police. The interstate had been closed for several hours before both eastbound and westbound lanes were reopened around 1:30 a.m. on Monday.
