In what was likely one of the largest personal injury settlements in LaPorte County history, a couple injured in a motorcycle collision in April 2014, agreed to accept a $12 Million settlement shortly before their case was scheduled to go to trial. This settlement was reached after the couple sustained serious injuries in a collision with a truck subcontracted by Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO) while riding a motorcycle on U.S. 12 in Michigan City, Indiana. The collision occurred when the driver of the truck made a left turn at the intersection at Washington Park Boulevard without properly yielding to the couple riding in the oncoming lane of traffic. As a result of the collision, the wife of the couple on the motorcycle was thrown nearly 120 feet from the location of initial impact and both motorcycle riders were immediately rushed to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Due to the severity of the collision impact, the husband of the couple was required to have a leg amputated, while his wife still suffers from numerous leg injuries even after undergoing multiple surgeries. The Attorney for the couple said that the driver of the truck contended that she did not pay careful attention to look around a large truck that blocked her view of oncoming traffic as she was in a hurry to check meters as part of her tremendous workload with NIPSCO and that she would have never took such a risky turn had she not worried about not accomplishing work requirements.
